Barney st, Kiama: Landscape Design and Construction
Client: John and Karen
Year Completed: 2017
Whilst boasting a magnificent view of Kiama Surf Beach and Lighthouse, this newly developed set of architecturally designed Hamptons style duplexes sat on a relatively small block of land which in turn created even smaller usable outdoor space for the owners. The challenge was to maximise the tiny and snug spaces surrounding the buildings by creating spaces that were functional, comfortable and played tribute to the architecture of the buildings.
The focus for the design turned to texture, form, materiality and of course function, what will these tight spaces be used for. The back court yards were transformed into intimate outdoor entertaining/relaxation spaces. Built in merbau daybeds were constructed to maximise space and suit multiple functions. Small planter boxes were constructed out of sandstock bricks to complement the style of the buildings architecture and to add some softening plantings to the space. A soft grey sandstone was used for the paving to contrast the browns of the bricks and timber.
The design of the front yards was also about functionality and creating a statement upon arrival with a small seating deck ideal for a morning coffee and large garden beds densely planted to create a comforting entry vibe. The plantings of the garden were designed with the Hampton’s style in mind while adding a modern coastal twist to assist the garden and property to fit snuggly in its setting.
