The key driver in the design of this family garden in Gerringong on the South Coast of NSW was the idea of creating a multifunctional space for the whole family. The backyard its self, while being relatively small, was designed to create several individual spaces each with their own character and use, independent from the rest. A large deck extending off the back of the house provides a formal outdoor entertaining space with a view over the backyard ideal for supervising children playing in the yard.
For the kids, a timber cubby house was constructed adjacent to the level grassed area ideal which is ideal for games and activities. An above ground pool has been cleverly integrated to sit level with the grassed area and features relaxation decks. For evenings and the cooler season, a paved sitting space complete with a fire pit makes a cosy place for the family to relax.
A semi tropical Balinese plant palette was adapted to provide a lush green backdrop and some privacy to the spaces but also to enhance the vibe of relaxation and sense of escape when entering the yard – a private tropical oasis.
